Protect your eyes with Ayurveda

Eye care is vital for all. Ayurveda suggests the three keys of health; exercise, proper care and balanced diet with excellent nutrition, to keep up the eye care.


Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, rich in beta carotene keeps your eyes healthy. Carrots, spinach, papaya and mangoes help to have healthy eyes. It protects eyes and keep body in a healthy condition.

Always give some rest to your eyes after long a hour work. Close your eyes and sit back for a while. Relax your eyes for about 2-5 minutes a in a day at any point in time between your work especially when you work in computer or minute things. Clean your eyes with water in the morning. Clean your eyes with normal water every day. Keep some water in your mouth while cleaning eyes. 
Fill your mouth with some water and take water in both the hands and splash it on the eyes. (That’s how we generally wash our face in the morning in Eastern World. ). Spit out the water from your mouth, that would clean your teeth too.

Summer dangers to the eyes

In a bright and hot summer, the harsh rays of the hot sun can become a problem for your eyes. The foreign parties in the winds during this season may cause many problems in optical health. The organs of the eyes may affected by dust and heat.

Protect your eyes from the attack of UV rays by having proper shades or sunglasses/visor. This is the only way to protect your eyes from heat and dust particles outdoors.

Ayurveda cure


Triphala is an effective ayurvedic herbal product prepared by mixing herbs harro (haritaki), Barro (bhibhitaki) and Amala (amalaki).

The triphala solution (lotion) is ayurvedic treatment to several eye problems. The Triphala choorna (powder) of this mixture is soaked in water for at least half an hour (whole night is better) to get the solution. Filter the solution very well, do not let the small particles enter your eyes. Instead of making of lotion of the powder, you can soak the pieces of triphal in water. Use coffee filter or any good filter or clean white cotton cloth to filter the Trifala mixture. Wash your eyes three times a day with the solution. For regular prevention, you can wash it once a day. Triphala lotion is effective to treat conjunctivitis and red eyes. Regular washing eyes with Triphala is healthy. It keeps eyes moist and prevents from eye diseases.

The same triphala powder is considered as Netra Rasayan (Eye tonic). It can be consumed with honey and pure ghee while going to bed at night. This strengthens the eyes and help to recover from constipation problem to some extent too. 

Chandrodaya Vati

Ayurvedic preparation called Chandrodaya vati is beneficial for eye care. It is made a paste in water and applied externally over closed eyes. Chandrodaya vati, which means an eye application at the rise of the moon, is beneficial in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis and eye irritation.

Aniseed and coriander

A mixture of aniseed (souf) powder and coriander seed powder in an equal proportion, taken with an identical weight of unrefined sugar, 12 grams each morning and evening. It is also good to keep your eyes cool and healthy.


You can perform eye exercise once a day to keep your eyes healthy.  


The palming exercise will teach you to relax your eyes, which makes your eyes healthy and full of energy.

Rub your hands together to make it warm. Then place your cupped hands over your both closed eyes. Don’t touch your eyes with the palms of your hands. The fingers of each hand should overlap and rest gently on the center of your forehead. Put your hands on eyes smoothly and softly. Perform this exercise anytime during the day. Morning is the best time.

Focus exercise

This exercise improves eye flexibility. Hold your thumb about half foot from your eyes. Focus on your thumb for a while. Then focus on something about 10 feet away from you. Repeat this for 10-15 times.


Scanning helps you to increase the flexibility of your eyes. Just move your eyes to scan the object at the corner of your eyes. Do it both the side and up and down. Do this for two minutes maximum.

Good diet, protection from heat and other foreign objects and good exercise of your eyes keep them healthy with long life.
