First President of Nepal
Ram Baran Yadav is the first president of Nepal. Ram Baran Yadav was born on February 4, 1948. He was elected by constitutional assembly in July 2008 and became the first president of Nepal. He had served as Minister of Health in Nepal government (1991-1994). He was also General Secretary of Nepali Congress. Nepali Congress is a political party.
He was elected to the House of Representatives in the 1999 election as a candidate from Nepali Congress. People elected Yadav twice as a Member of the House of Representatives from the Constituency No. 5 of Dhanusa district of Nepal.
Yadav’s residence is in Janakpur and he contested the Dhanusa-5 constituency in the April 2008 Constituent Assembly election. He won the seat, obtaining 10,392 votes.
![]() Yadav took oath as President on July 23, 2008. Chief Justice Kedar Prasad Giri administered the oath of office and secrecy to Yadav at Shital Niwas now called Rastrapati Bhawan.
Ram Baran Yadav was born to Thani Yadav and Ram Rati Yadav on February 4, 1948 in a rural area at Sapahi Village Development Committee (VDC), Ward No. 9, Dhanusa district, Nepal.
He speaks Maithili at home. He is a medical doctor. He married Julekha Yadav and has three children: Chandra Mohan Yadav, Anita Yadav and Chandra Shekhar Yadav.
Yadav's political journey starts from Calcutta where he was studying medicine. (Ram Baran studied medicine from Calcutta University). He then came in contact with several Nepali politicians who were sheltered in India. He met many political figures like B. P. Koirala, Ganesh Man Singh, Subarna Shamsher, Pushpa Lal Shrestha, Saroj Koirala and many more.
Inspired by all the political people, Yadav also entered into politics. He championed the demonstration against the rule of king and in support of restoration of democracy.
He was a private practitioner for many years and it is said he was family physician to Koirala family too. Yadav was freedom fighter for several years. He also spent nine months in prison.
After restoration of democracy in 1990, he took his political career to new level. People elected Yadav twice as a Member of the House of Representatives from the Constituency No. 5 of Dhanusa district of Nepal. Yadav was elected as a Member of the Constituent Assembly from the same constituency of Dhanusa District during the elections held on 10 April 2008.
He became the Minister of State for Health from 1991 to 1994. He again took charge of the Ministry of Health as the Cabinet Minister from 1999 to 2001.
Yadav served Nepali Congress Party in various positions. He was a member of the Central Working Committee for 15 years, and also a member of Parliamentary Board, and member of the Discipline Committee of the Party. Immediately before being elected to the President, he was General Secretary of the Nepali Congress Party. |
